How long would a ship from Canada to Europe take to ship soldiers in WW1?
How many months? the movie ‘Passchendaele’ gives the idea that it took about 3 months, but i would think it would take longer.
About a week, or a little longer.
By 1914 they had the first generation of 30-knot megaliners. One of these can do the trip in about 5 days (unless she hits an iceberg) and the slower boats - the 10-day boats, mainly luxury liners of the previous generation, now downgraded - were still around, and of course cheaper.
A troopship would do much the same speed as an older liner; in fact most of them were converted liners. They tended to do their fastest speed most of the way to dodge submarines. So start from 10 days, and reckon a little faster if there was a hurry, or a little slower in case of foul weather or reports of ice.
3 months implies an average day’s run of around 30 miles. This is ridiculous, and would have been ridiculous most of the time in the age of sail. You could row a ship’s boat faster than that.
Hope this helps.
