Thumbsucker (2005)

IMDB rating: 6.80

Plot: Justin (Lou Taylor Pucci) is a teenager boy, who has an oral obsession with his thumb. His mother (Tilda Swinton) seems to be a normal housekeeper, but she has her own obsessions as well, like a crush on a TV-star (Benjamin Bratt). The only person who’s aware of Justin’s problem is his father (Vincent D’Onofrio), manager in a store, but none of his advices seem to be working for Justin. The kid is signed up in a debate workshop, but the thing isn’t going well, because he has his mind in a pretty classmate and, of course, in his thumb, affecting all the rest of his classes. So, Justin is a loner kid in the school, who prefers to lock himself in the bathroom and suck his thumb. Justin’s dentist (Keanu Reeves), a mystical-hippie person, will try to help to overcome his thumb problem, through the hypnosis. But the school’s psychologist will diagnose Justin with the Attention Deficit Disorder, and will prescribe him some drugs. Suddenly, Justin’s problem with his thumb will disappear, becoming an hyperactive genius, winning several debate contests and the admiration from his teacher (Vince Vaughn). Nevertheless, more serious problems will come for Justin with his mother, his father and with a drug addiction.

What are some good movies like Garden State, Thumbsucker, Rocket Science, The Royal Tenenbaums, or Rushmore?
I love quirky indie films like these, Help me find some other ones. Please :)

Well it seems you like Wes Anderson (Great Director). If you like indie films you should check out more of his films: Bottle Rocket, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and The Darjeeling Limited. Another great indie film would be The Squid and the Whale directed by Noah Baumbach. It stars Jeff Daniels, Laura Linney, and Jesse Eisenberg. That one was actually produced by Wes Anderson. Another would be The Savages with Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

my mom is obsessed with with another woman (read)?
My mom and dad are married. My mom was once obsessed with my old pre school teacher, for 14 years. She would court her, give her over extravagant gifts along with the rest of her family, cook her meals, take her out to lunch. I was and still am annoyed by it. I wasnt the only one bothered by this, my dad gave up on fighting about it, and when some one brought the subject up, shed shoot it down, because she is the kind of person who cant be wrong, no matter what. OVEr time i kinda excepted it, because my mom backed it up with the excuse that she was less fortunate then us, which was definitely true, and after 10 or so years I just came to terms with it.

A year ago, the pre school teacher’s home burned in a giant brush fire, when i wanted my mom to actually be there for her, she deserted her. She stopped helping her, and that agitated me even more, now i actually felt bad for the poor lady, a time where she actually deserved the gifts, but my mom left her in her time of need

She moved onto a new lady. A phony ass cantor at our temple. She is so phony and everyone can see it, and she is again courting this woman. And i especially cannot stand it, because this bitch is rich, she is not at all less fortunate. She had a gaul stone issue a couple of months ago, and my mom rushed over with a huge ass boquet of flowers, 2 weeks later, she made a meal bigger than thanksgiving and catered it to her. Not to mention that the lady didnt give us back any of our pots back until last week, and the meal was made in november

i dont even know why this aggravates me soo much, but everytime i try to talk about it with her, she wont have it, she shoots me down calling me ridiculous, saying that its none of my business, and that ill understand when im older, and to top it off she grounds me. But this obsession with another woman, has been going on since i was 4, and im almost 18, and i still see no explanation or end for this behavior.

What is your insight, am i crazy, or would this bother u to?

Is this the same monkeys can fly from the Los Angeles forum??

Anyways, dang! It would bug the crap out of me too! It’s like, "Okay, she has a husband and daughter to tend to! What about them!?"

I also find it quite messed up that she will all of a sudden abandon a woman who needed somebody to be at her aid. My best assumption is that she is looking for something bigger in the friendship and when she found out that your preschool teacher has nothing to give in return, she deserted her and moved on.

At this moment, you really can’t do anything about it. You have to let her do her thing and then hopefully one day she’ll realize that 20 years of her life were spent doing nothing beneficial.

Speedy Gonzales (RIP, kitty!) | Jan 28, 2010

You sound very perceptive, for one thing. And yeah, it would piss me off too (well, it would have at your age - turns out my dad wasn’t faithful to her, and if he were still alive and she started trying to get a girl, I’d be cheering her on ;) ) But it also sounds like she’s not open to talking about it, either because she doesn’t want to admit to what she’s doing, or she’s managed to justify it to herself and feels like she’s not doing anything that needs explaining (though I’m sure she knows on some level, or else she wouldn’t refuse to discuss it).

It sounds like your mom has a lot of issues. If I were you I’d leave it alone until I was living out of the house (so she couldn’t ground me and I could just hang up the phone if it got too frustrating) for the sake of my own sanity.

What should i do in the military?
I am planning on going army special forces and being an engineer Sergeant (18c) Im 18, my plan is to enlist with the special forces path as my contract. Im enlisting and going to training as unassigned infantry (11x) and then im through with that and when im 18 1/2 im going to go through the SFAS and once i make that, go through the year and a half of training and continue as special forces until i feel its a good time to stop re-enlisting. This is my basic plan, not much detail, just to let you all know my current plan. But i like to keep my options open.

Im excited for the Special Forces. I’m in shape, im not worried about any of the physical stuff for SF, especially after i finish basic. Dont get me wrong, i know its gonna be hard. My biggest worry was that i might not do well on the ASVAB, but i did WAY better than i was planning on. All of the uniforms at the testing area said i could get any job i want in any branch with my scores.

Give me some ideas.

I love engineering, more specifically demolitions and (simply) building anything out of anything and having it be functional. Im the kid that spent hours of every day building models, playing with legos, making dams out of dirt in my backyard, building forts out of scrap wood 100 feet up in the trees, building habitats for all the things i found exploring the outdoors. And this is when i was little, like 4th grade. In high school i spent weeks at a time hiking through mountains and deserts around the weastern states bear grills style (survival expert, has a show on the discovery channel "Man vs. Wild"). Im putting this here to kinda give you an idea of what im good at and what i like to do.

Let me know what you think. I want something thats challenging and exciting. Something thats the top of the top. Delta Force, Force Recon, Seals, and Special Forces are thing that come to mind.

Do yourself a favor and go talk to an Air Force recruiter. With those scores you would be a perfect fit for the AF. Basic training is shorter and the people you would be working with would be much closer to your intellectual ability. As a former Air Force member and mother of a new airman I wish you the best of luck in your future.

You definitely sound like someone who could be a navy SEAL! Good Luck!
Victoria M | Jan 07, 2010

OK, I think I need to stop you right there. Given your ASVAB scores, I think you should try for something other than infantry. Special Forces is great, but there is a strong possibility you will not make it in, and thus be stuck doing infantry for your enlistment. And this is regardless of how motivated or tough or smart you are, some people get injured, and some people just don’t have the stamina to make it through special forces, regardless of their motivation (this also applies to other types of special forces like Navy Seals as well).

Anyway, think about what I said, I don’t think you will that happy just doing infantry in the long run, which you may just end up doing, I’d pick something more intellectually stimulating (no offense to infantry, some of them are quite bright, but the job itself doesn’t tend to be intellectually challenging).

Although I do agree that Special Forces is pretty great if you get in, I think they have the best overall training around for what they do.
Ghost of Tom Joad | Jan 07, 2010

looks like you’ve got a good start. honestly the best thing to do would be to speak with a recruiter. they will know exactly what’s opened and available and will also know by your score what your best fit will be

SF,WARRANT OFFICER,ENGINEER.
Jeremy | Jan 07, 2010

Tactical engineering and building engineering are two vastly different things.

18X requires you to be age 20 I think. You don’t want to do 18X anyway because the washout rate is higher. You need tactical experience.

11X is okay but what happens if you get 11C? ick (my opinion). 19D is a good option as well as 13F. I’m partial to 13F because you get to do the grunt training and you’ll learn a lot about self location, target acquisition, fire planning, commo etc that you may not be exposed to as much as a grunt (somewhat more as a 19D). All three are great choices for SF prep but so are a lot of other combat arms jobs.

Why not go in as a 21B and see if you like tactical engineering for a couple years before you apply for SF?

You have some options but your plan will require tweaking.

What is wrong with me?! I'm terrified of everything. Help?
I’m normally a fairly rational person. I’m afraid of normal things like under the wring circumstances getting shot or hit by a bus but little things like the dark and heights and spiders they don’t bother me. Lately i’ve been absolutely terrified of everything! I have a strong sense of impending doom, I’m afraid my fiance myself or my unborn baby are going die in violent tragic accidents, I’m afraid of giving birth I’m afraid of getting fat, of getting in the car, of the stairs, of…. Everything. I’m twenty three weeks pregnant with my first, i’m afraid to go to the doctor but I get the feeling that I should because these fears might be related to the baby nut I don’t know. I’m panicking without any real rational reason to do so and it scares me. I’m sick of being scared! Help me!!

Tell your doctor!
Cindy D | Feb 04, 2010

Sounds like your hormone levels may be a bit off. Pregnant women often have problems with depression and anxiety–ignore your irrational fear of going to the doctor and talk to your OB GYN. He or she is the best person to help you.
Carrie | Feb 04, 2010

It’s totally pregnancy hormones for sure. It’s amazing what a woman’s body goes through during pregnancy. You could be laughing one minute and balling right after it for no apparent reason. There really isn’t anything you can do about it other then try and take some quiet moments during the day where you can sit down and close your eyes and breathe deep and just imagine all those thoughts floating down the stream. Trust me, it works. I would also inform your OB, just so they can monitor you after your baby is born for postpartum depression. It’s so common. Don’t think there is anything wrong with you. It’s your hormones. I went through the same thing during pregnancy and had this fear of delivering a still birth and I could NOT stop thinking about it, until I learned how to just sit and relax when I was feeling that way and just imagining all those thoughts floating down the stream. When you are sitting there breathing, keep thinking to yourself, "calm" and keep saying it. It really does help. Hang in there and congrats on your pregnancy. =)

PS, don’t expect your hormones to bounce right back after the delivery either, you will still be feeling strange and not normal until your body goes back to normal, that’s why I say talk to your OB and tell them so they can be prepared for anything postpardum with you.

The Hangover

The Hangover
The Hangover (2009)

IMDB rating: 8.40

Plot: Angelenos Doug Billings and Tracy Garner are about to get married. Two days before the wedding, the four men in the wedding party - Doug, Doug’s two best buddies Phil Wenneck and Stu Price, and Tracy’s brother Alan Garner - hop into Tracy’s father’s beloved Mercedes convertible for a 24-hour stag party to Las Vegas. Phil, a married high school teacher, has the same maturity level as his students when he’s with his pals. Stu, a dentist, is worried about everything, especially what his controlling girlfriend Melissa thinks. Because she disapproves of traditional male bonding rituals, Phil has to lie to her about the stag, he telling her that they are going on a wine tasting tour in the Napa Valley. Regardless, he intends on eventually marrying her, against the advice and wishes of his friends. And Alan seems to be unaware of what are considered the social graces of the western world. The morning after their arrival in Las Vegas, they awaken in their hotel suite each with the worst hangover. None remembers what happened in the past twelve or so hours. The suite is in shambles. And certain things are in the suite that shouldn’t be, and certain things that should be in the suite are missing. Probably the most important in the latter category is Doug. As Phil, Stu and Alan try to find Doug using only what little pieces of information they have at hand, they go on a journey of discovery of how certain things got into the suite and what happened to the missing items. However they are on a race for time as if they can’t find Doug in the next few hours, they are going to have to explain to Tracy why they are not yet back in Los Angeles. And even worse, they may not find Doug at all before the wedding.

How to AVOID a HANGOVER?

drink water with your alcohol, eat, take an advil or 2 before bed
water keeps you HYDRATED :) Coco | Feb 04, 2010

Simple: don’t drink alcohol.
@Coco: drinking water doesn’t make any difference what so ever. It’s been scientifically proven that it doesn’t work.

Drink water while you drink….

Have a couple of glasses or water and take two of something with Ibuprofen in it just before you go to bed..

You will wake up fine
Nostrils | Feb 04, 2010

Pretty easy its just two steps. Follow these and you’ll never get a hang over ever. For every drink you have, drink a glass of water. Yea you’ll be peeing all night but the plus side is no hang over at all!!!! also pop one tylenol, (not advil because it is hard on the liver, and the booze your drinking is already doing a number on your liver and the combination would be killer for your liver) . before bed. Thats it. Also, if you can, sneak in a light snack before bedtime, this will settle your stomache for the morning
D. Chance | Feb 04, 2010

Drink a large glass of water and take a B complex vitamin pill just before sleeping.
voicefromparis | Feb 04, 2010

Don’t take advil for you it is bad for you to mix it with alcohol. I drink all of the time and I am fine. I have a vitamin (1 regular vitamin that has B 12 and B 6 in it) and I drink like 3 or 4 water bottles. Have lemon in your water. It helps your liver break down the alcohol and release toxins. Drink green tea in the morning. Works for me.
Jaena | Feb 04, 2010

Don’t drink. That would be the simple solution.
bleweyez20249 | Feb 04, 2010

Don’t Drink. If you are going to drink eat something first and don’t mix alcohol. some wine may not agree with you no matter what.
Dangel5 | Feb 04, 2010

Drink a lot of water, don’t drink to much.
Jason | Feb 04, 2010

You can’t avoid a hangover, but you can do small things to lessen the impact. Drinking water DOES help. I’m not sure how it does exactly, but I know for a fact that it’s recommended. Eating is also important. Have something simple like bread, if possible. Taking pain medication, however, is a bad idea. Mixing drugs and alcohol is never a good idea. You can take some the next morning if you really have to, since some alcohol would have passed through your system.
Also, the type of alcohol your consuming can effect your hangover. The more impurities it has, the worse it is. Red wine is the worst for hangovers, then white wine (which sucks coz goon is so cheap!). I think bourbon is next, then beer. The most pure alcohols (least impurities) are vodka and tequila, which have the added benefit of getting you drunk quicker without filling up your bladder with all that unnecessary water!!

caleb | Feb 04, 2010

Well I herd you can prevent the hangover by adding a shit load of water to your alcohol. then before you go to bed take a vitamin pills and eat a banana (you can use mine) lmao jk. but really the water with alcohol thing isnt worth it.. just get as wasted as you can and enjoy the hangover..it will eventually wear off!
candyflavoredcondoms | Feb 04, 2010

Hangover Prevention

Don’t drink. (doh!)
Take a Berocca before you start drinking. This gets a reserve of Vitamin B into you.
Alternate fruit juice or water in amongst your drinks to avoid dehydration later on. Avoid fizzy or sugary stuff. The purists reckon that about 200ml of water is needed to effectively counteract each 30ml of alcohol.
The alcohol in carbonated drinks is absorbed more quickly than in non-carbonated drinks.
Reduce the amount of sugar you consume with your alcohol. The forced metabolism of sugar AND alcohol by your body will accelerate the depletion of B vitamins and make the hangover worse.
The 2am pig-out. Pizza or pasta is usually best since cheese and carbohydrates are a good source of amino acids. Actually food is a good idea all round - before, during and immediately after drinking. Food doesn’t absorb alcohol, but it does increase metabolism, activates alcohol absorption, and increases the speed with which the body processes alcohol.

Miss Congeniality
Miss Congeniality (2000)

IMDB rating: 6.20

Plot: When a serial killer indicates that his next target is the Miss United States beauty pageant, the F.B.I. decides that they must get an undercover agent as a participant in the contest. A search uncovers no suitable candidate other than a bumbling female agent (Sandra Bullock). Reluctantly, her captain (Ernie Hudson) agrees to let her join the team working the case. The team is led by a womanizing agent (Ben Bratt) who has an apparent reluctant attraction to Bullock’s character. She enters as Miss New Jersey, replacing a contestant who was discovered to have acted in a porno film. The pageant managers (Candice Bergen, William Shatner) are immediately aghast about the agent appearing in the pageant, but arrange a top handler (Michael Caine) to come give her a quick makeover, with the expected outstanding results. Unfortunately, she still is bumbling. When the killer is suddenly caught, everything seems to be over, except the female agent tries to convince her boss that something is still not right. She has discovered that the pageant managers are being dismissed after 21 years for younger people, and Bergen’s character may not be as solid as she seems on the surface.

Happy Monday R&P, How many margaritas do you imagine there are in Los Angeles? (#57)?
Hi Everybody.
Here’s another installment of my Top 101 (mix tape rules) Countdown. Mix tape rules simply means that I only allowed myself one song per artist/band.

Here are some recent selections:
68. Bruce Springsteen - Does This Bus Stop at 82nd Street
67. Jason Loewenstein - NYC III
66. the Breeders - Only in 3’s
65. Okkervil River - It Ends With A Fall
64. the Zombies - Time of the Season
63. Weezer - Tired of Sex
62. The Spires - Wild Death
61. The Mars Volta - The Widow
60. Deerhoof - This Magnifcent Bird Will Rise
59. Robert Pollard - Make Use
58. Talking Heads - Crosseyed and Painless

For #57 I went with a song that I think is just a wonderful piece of songwriting and song construction. Sucks me in, hook, line and sinker with really great lyrics and melody, and a big build that just pays off really nicely. I hope you like it.

Warren Zevon - Desperados Under the Eaves

So, what did you think? What’s your favorite Warren Zevon tune?

Thanks a lot everybody. I’m a bit under the weather today and I’m not sure how long I’m going to last at work so I may not be in here and responding too much. I hope you all had a great weekend and the week is off to a nice start.

If anyone wants to know about songs that preceded those that are listed please just let me know in your answer and I can fill put the whole list up. It just made the question in general too long to put it up unless I’m prompted to do so.
Hi Wire,
Thanks for the link. His stuff is pretty hard to access from at least the couple of sites that I’m used to. I tried to make a youtube for this song and it got pretty much instantly wiped out for the copywrite.
I’m not sure that I know that one, there is a vague familiarity to it but I don’t recall. I liked it a lot though. Thanks for the post man.
Have a good one.
Hi Radio.
Thanks man. I appreciate that. I’m sure I’ll be back in the swing of things in the next couple days.
Excitable Boy is a wonderful record. A big one from my childhood, and he really just does have some really amazing stuff in his catalog. Lawyers, Guns and Money is another awesome track.
Thanks a lot man. Have a good one.
The Pixies cover didn’t do a ton for me, but I got what they were doing and I do kind of chalk it up to "it’s not them, it’s me." I’m not really sure why it missed for me, but there was just some lingering thing I couldn’t put my finger on. You’re right about Bam Thwok though. I just was not into that song.
Thanks a lot man. Happy Monday.

i too can only hear 30 secs again - i’m going to see if it’s available on spotify or something.

Get well soon, prof.

great Zevon tune, my favorite would probably be either Werewolves of London or Lawyers, Guns, and Money. Excitable Boy is my favorite album of his, and it’d be hard for me not to pick something off of it. Then again, it’s hard to argue against any of his songs — he was a tremendous writer.

The Pixies cover of Ain’t That Pretty At All (another favorite Zevon tune of mine) was a much better post-reunion recording than Bam Thwok.

Hi Prof.!
Hope you had a fun weekend.

I couldn’t play that link but that’s ok because I love Warren Zevon and know that song very well (along with most of his catalogue). He was such a great singer, songwriter, and musician and he’s one of the few musicians that I really miss a lot!
My favorite of his is "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner" and this is a great performance from Letterman’s show:

One of the things I miss the most on Letterman is Warren because he was almost a weekly visitor on his show.
Enjoy every sandwich!

That was very pretty, Prof.

I love Warren Zevon, and would (of course) have a hard time naming a favorite song… but in the top 10 are:
Carmelita
Lawyers, guns and money
Mohammed’s radio
Poor poor pitiful me
Roland the headless thompson gunner

Sorry to hear you’re under the weather! Hope it’s just a blip and you’re back as good as new soon :-)
Rest and fluids. And vitamin C.

Help! I got caught stealing, this is my first time. (California)?
I stole from Nordstrom today and they said they will send me a letter for my court date in a month or so.
also i am 17 years old, 4 months until im 18.
What should I do?
I have stolen before.
They said the company will fine me, and the court might fine me again.
They also caught me stealing from other stores (this was a mall), what will happen with those items?
I had tools and they could have charged me with 2 felonies but only gave me 1 misdemeanor which I am very thankful for.
they know i stole before. but how long should i say i have been stealing?
just a couple other times from target?
what should i expect?
im very scared, my family has no income, my father has been laid off and we are living on his severance pay..

wooww
i have no idea
but why r u stealing?!?!
get yourself a job this is going on your record.
you’re going to have problems for the rest of your life i can
assure youu :/

You will probably do some time in a juvenile institution then be transferred to a prison to serve out the remainder of your sentence. If you go to prison, gangs will be after you and so will homosexual rapists.
You obviously haven’t learned your lesson about not stealing.
expatmt | Feb 07, 2010

Honestly, i don’t pity anyone that steals. You need to be honest and not lie. If you get caught lying, you will be in a worse situation. After the penalty, go find a job. I don’t care if it is flipping burgers, or scraping crap off a bathroom floor, just work. If you cannot find work, then find a charity in your community that can help your family. But to be stealing from Nordstrom tells me that the theft wasn’t one of necessity. This will make it so they have no sympathy as it is a selfish act. You take from a store, which then has lower sales which then makes it so they have to fire someone else, and you put someone else in your families position.

Shame on you. Never do this sort of thing again…
